Active Pursuits: Rockhounding & Gold-Panning Frommer

The state's mining heritage continues in many areas among rock hounders, who search for semiprecious gemstones, petrified woods, and agatized fossil bones. The Salida area has some of the best rockhounding opportunities in the state, and amateur gold-panners should visit Idaho Springs (near Denver), Silverton, and Country Boy Mine in Breckenridge. Contact the Colorado Geological Survey, 1313 Sherman St., Room 715, Denver, CO 80203 (tel. 303/866-2611; www.geosurvey.state.co.us), for information, maps, and a list of locations.
